Wedding Ring FAQ's

Do Wedding Rings have to match?

Wondering if your wedding rings need to match? The simple answer is: not at all. At Poppy Elder Fine Jewellery, we believe in celebrating each couple's unique style and story.

While some couples love the idea of matching rings as a symbol of their unity, others prefer to express their individuality with different designs. It's all about what resonates with you both. Whether you're drawn to similar styles or contrasting ones, what matters most is that your rings reflect your personal tastes and the bond you share.

In our collection of UK-made wedding rings, we offer a variety of styles to cater to every preference. And if you're thinking of something truly bespoke, we're here to craft rings that perfectly symbolise your individual personalities and your journey together.

The one rule we like to advise couples to follow is to make sure you choose a wedding ring that is the same metal you an engagement ring if they are going to be worn together. This is to make sure the rings don’t damage each other. But other than that, choose what you love!

So, let your wedding rings be a reflection of you – whether they match, complement each other, or stand out on their own. After all, it's your love story to tell.

How to wear your Wedding and Engagement Ring

Confused about how to wear your wedding and engagement rings? Here's the traditional way we love at Poppy Elder Fine Jewellery, but remember, it's all about what feels right for you.

In the UK, the wedding ring is typically worn closest to the heart, meaning on the fourth finger of your left hand, followed by the engagement ring on top. So, during your wedding ceremony, you'll put on your wedding ring first, then slip your engagement ring on next.

But hey, rules are made to be played with! If you prefer a different order, or even wearing your rings on separate fingers or hands for comfort or style, that's totally fine too. After all, these rings are symbols of your unique love story, so wearing them in a way that feels most comfortable and meaningful to you is what matters most.

Is the Engagement ring the same as the Wedding ring?

At Poppy Elder Fine Jewellery, we often get asked: Is the Engagement Ring the same as the WeddingRing? Let's clear this up! The engagement ring and the wedding ring are two distinct pieces, each symbolising different aspects of your journey together.

The engagement ring is typically given at the proposal and symbolises the commitment to marry. It's often more ornate, featuring a diamond or other gemstone and is usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand.

The wedding ring, on the other hand, is exchanged during the wedding ceremony. It's traditionally a more simple band compared to the engagement ring (although not always) and represents the official bond of marriage.

While some people choose to wear both rings together on the same finger, others opt for different styles or wear them separately. In our collection of unique, UK-made rings, we offer a variety of both engagement and wedding rings, celebrating each couple's unique style and story.

So, while they are different, both rings are equally special, representing the love and commitment you share.

What are Ethical Wedding Rings?

What exactly are ethical wedding rings? At Poppy Elder Fine Jewellery, these aren't just any rings – they're symbols of your love, crafted with a deep respect for people and the planet.

Ethical wedding rings are made from materials sourced in a way that’s mindful of environmental and social impacts. This means choosing conflict-free diamonds and gemstones, using recycled metals, or opting for Fairtrade Gold. By selecting these materials, we ensure that our jewellery-making doesn't harm the environment or exploit workers.

When you choose an ethical wedding ring from us, you're embracing a piece that’s not just beautiful but also responsible. It’s about wearing a ring that represents not just a commitment to each other but also to the values you hold dear.

So, ethical wedding rings are more than just jewellery. They’re a celebration of love, crafted with care, conscience, and a commitment to making a positive impact in the world. Ethics and sustainability are at the heart of each piece I create from the precious metals to the beautiful packaging. Read about our ethics here.

How to Get a Wedding Band to Match an Engagement Ring?

If you have a low or unusually shaped Engagement Ring it can be difficult to get a straight wedding ring to sit with your ring without a big gap. There are many different ways to fix this, one is with a V shaped wedding ring where you can use the gap as a feature of your wedding set. Another is to create a Bespoke Wedding ring that perfectly fits against your Engagement Ring without any gaps.

What are modern Wedding Ring styles?

Modern wedding rings include mixing band materials and engraving being used on the wedding band. Floral engraved wedding bands are increasing in popularity as they add a uniqueness to the piece, whilst being discrete and beautiful.

Who traditionally pays for the Wedding Rings?

Traditionally, each person pays for the other person's wedding ring. Although wedding rings are usually chosen by the couple together, the Wedding rings do not have to match as each individual has their own taste and preference.

Is Platinum better than Gold for Wedding Rings?

If you are looking for a wedding band that is white or silver in colour, then yes I would recommend Platinum over White Gold. This is because white gold has a slightly yellow tone to it, because it is made up with a mixture of metals that include gold - which is naturally yellow. The white gold rings that you might be used to seeing as bright silver in colour have a plating to give that bright colour, but unfortunately this wears off and needs maintaining. Platinum is naturally silver in colour and doesn’t need this plating to give its appearance.

Of course if you like the natural tone of white gold without plating this is a good option, and if you’re looking for a gold coloured wedding band then I’d definitely suggest sticking to 18ct gold.
